Wrestling fans love a mystery person angle, with there often being a lot of excitement and talk over who a particular masked individual or mastermind behind an operation is. In AEW right now, this comes in the form of “The Devil”, a mysterious figure who has been targeting the AEW World Champion, MJF. “The Devil” is one of the nicknames used by MJF, and the mask worn by this mystery person is the mask owned by MJF himself, which he has sported numerous times. It has been a couple of months now, and The Devil hasn’t been revealed. There have been some potential clues, possible names, and several appearances, so let's collate it to see everything we know about The Devil so far.

The Devil Has Appeared On AEW Programming

The Masked Figure Has Been Causing Mayhem For Months

• The Devil debuted in a backstage attack on Jay White
• The Devil has not revealed themself

On the September 27 episode of AEW Dynamite, the show went off-air with masked assailants attacking Jay White, watched on by someone in a devil mask. White assumed this was MJF, given that White targeted the champion and MJF had used the mask previously. MJF refuted these accusations, but White hasn’t been the only one to assume that MJF is simply slipping back into his status as a villain, as Roderick Strong has also pointed fingers towards him as being The Devil.

Since then, The Devil has shown up now and again at select moments. For instance, when MJF had finally accepted support from The Acclaimed, The Devil’s goons unleashed an attack on the trio, taking them out of action. The Devil has also shown up on the tron occasionally, seemingly teasing MJF and reminding him of this shadowy figure that is constantly looming over him. In recent weeks, fans even heard The Devil laugh and speak, though it has been distorted a great deal. The most recent act from The Devil saw his masked followers appear live in the ring, seconds away from attacking MJF before he was saved by Samoa Joe.

AEW Has Given Some Minor Clues About The Devil

• There have been a few hints to The Devil being Adam Cole

There have been some clues when it comes to who The Devil could be. The last time MJF was seen with his devil mask was at the AEW All In 2023 event, and after the show, MJF and Adam Cole were both in the locker room with the mask hanging behind them. Interestingly, the mask was hung above Cole, which could be a hint that he is the one who stole it. Cole has been the best friend of MJF for the last several months, though his desire to become AEW World Champion nearly led to him betraying his ally and going down a darker path - something he ultimately strayed away from.

When it comes to Cole, he is now sidelined with an injury, but his friendship with Roderick Strong is an interesting element, as the masked men could easily be Strong and The Kingdom, who may have been scheming with Cole all along. Additionally, Cole has been very upfront about MJF both teaming with and facing Samoa Joe, almost too upfront. Some ulterior motives could be at play - perhaps in terms of weakening MJF and trying to make him lose the AEW World Title. If it is Cole, then his long-term injury could have delayed plans on a reveal. He isn’t the only suspect though.

MJF has a lot of enemies, one of whom is Wardlow, who did in fact return around the same time as The Devil appeared on AEW programming. He hasn’t made it a secret that he is seeking revenge on MJF, and hasn’t hid behind a mask to do so, which puts him more out of the running. Samoa Joe could’ve been in and amongst it, but he has outwardly strived to protect MJF against The Devil’s lackeys to ensure that MJF is 100% for their Worlds End title match. Britt Baker, the partner of Adam Cole, has been thrown in the conversation, even making devil horns in a music video collaboration between AEW and Doja Cat. It should be noted though that a report from Fightful Select did rule out both Britt Baker and CM Punk.

Baker herself was asked about whether she was The Devil, but she shut these rumors down when appearing on 1035 KISSFM; "I'm not (The Devil), but then I'm like, maybe I would be a good devil. It's not me, but if I could be, would I be? Maybe. Then I'm like, who is better to stir some sh*t up than me?" (H/T Fightful)

Who Are The Most Likely Candidates For The AEW Devil?

Adam Cole And Jack Perry Lead The Running

The person at the top of the list along with Adam Cole is Jack Perry, who hasn’t been seen in AEW since the very same night that his devil mask went missing at AEW All In. Perry has a long history with MJF, with the pair feuding together more than once. In fact, earlier this year MJF himself told Perry that he needed to find some more edge and dig deeper into his dark side if he ever wanted to make it. Shortly after, Perry did in fact turn heel, and he could well be taking this one step further as The Devil.

AEW Dynamite on December 7 will have an interesting development, with MJF and Samoa Joe teaming in a tag team match after being challenged by The Devil, so some unmaskings could well take place. Whether it be Adam Cole, Jack Perry, Britt Baker, or even someone out of left field, it will be a big reveal when it does happen. Fightful Select have reported that those under the masks currently are in fact that actual people who are set to be revealed, so those eagle eyed may be able to spot body types. Thus far though, this is all we have to go on, and it isn’t much.
